Review: Derulo brings the hits, lacks originality

Jason Derulo's debut single, "Whatcha Say," is an infectious tune that reached No. 1 in the United States and was a Top 10 hit elsewhere. But Derulo doesn't deserve much credit for the feat.

The song samples Imogen Heap's dreamy and computerized 2005 tune "Hide and Seek" — so why would we praise him for adding virtually nothing to her already impeccable song?

Derulo's second single, "In My Head," is also a Top 10 hit but doesn't showcase his personality either. Just check out the music video and you'll think of Justin Timberlake's "Like I Love You."

The rest of Derulo's self-titled debut is uneventful: The pop ballad "What If" echoes Ne-Yo and what follows sounds like second-rate Chris Brown or third-rate Usher.

CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: "What If" may sound like a song Ne-Yo purposely left on his laptop — but for Derulo, it is his CD's highlight.
