Kate Bosworth (born Catherine Ann Bosworth on January 2, 1983) is an American actress. After appearing in 1998's The Horse Whisperer, Bosworth became well known with a leading role in 2002's Blue Crush, and has since appeared in several notable films, including Superman Returns, where she played Lois Lane.
Kate Bosworth was born in Los Angeles, California to Hal Bosworth (an executive for Talbots) and Patricia Potter (a homemaker). She was born with sectoral heterochromia, resulting in a hazel section at the bottom of her right blue eye, while the left is completely blue. After leaving San Francisco at the age of six, Bosworth's family frequently moved around the country because of her father's job, and Bosworth grew up mainly on the East Coast, spending the rest of her youth in Darien, Connecticut and Cohasset, Massachusetts. She has noted that because of her family's frequent relocations, she always felt like the "new girl in school", and describes herself as "shy" and unpopular during her high school years, specifying that she has "this pain in my heart from what it was like to walk in with your lunch tray and not have anywhere to sit".
While attending Cohasset high school (which she graduated from in 2001), Bosworth learned to speak Spanish and was a member of the National Honor Society; she also played varsity soccer and lacrosse. Bosworth has always been interested in a professional career as a competitive horse racer and, by the age of fourteen, was a champion equestrian.
Bosworth's first film role came after an open casting call in New York for the supporting part of "Judith" in the 1998 film, The Horse Whisperer. The film's producers needed someone who was already an experienced horse rider, leading to Bosworth's successful audition for the role. She subsequently had a supporting part in the 2000 film Remember the Titans. In 2001, Bosworth moved to Los Angeles in hopes of obtaining easier access to auditions and better film parts. Her first leading role was in 2002's surfing movie, Blue Crush. The film received positive reviews and grossed $40 million at the United States box office, allowing Bosworth wider exposure to a mainstream audience.
Between 2002 and 2005, Kate Bosworth appeared in a number of widely released films. She starred as actress Sandra Dee in Beyond the Sea and played the lead role in Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!, opposite Josh Duhamel. Bosworth also portrayed Chali, a Hare Krishna, in a film adaption of Myla Goldberg's acclaimed novel Bee Season, about a dysfunctional Jewish family. She has appeared in several Revlon ads and ranked as #60 in FHM's "100 Sexiest Women in the World 2005" list. For two years running, she has placed on the Maxim magazine Hot 100 List--#38 in 2005 and #8 in 2006. She was also number two on E!'s 2006's "Girls of Summer" list.
In 2005, Bosworth was cast as reporter Lois Lane in the new Superman movie, Superman Returns. Her Beyond the Sea co-star, Kevin Spacey, who also appears in Superman Returns, suggested Bosworth for the role to director Bryan Singer. Bosworth initially hesitated to take the role, citing the iconic nature of the character, and the potentially negative fan reaction to her performance, but eventually accepted. The film was released on June 28, 2006, and Bosworth has already signed on for a potential sequel.
Bosworth describes herself as "insecure", and has detailed that she is "learning" and maturing as an actress. She will next appear in the Great Depression-themed independent film drama, Seasons of Dust, which will also star Bosworth's current boyfriend, Orlando Bloom. The film will be directed by Tim Blake Nelson, and will begin filming in mid-July 2006 in New Mexico and Oklahoma.
Bosworth was admitted to Princeton University in 2000, but continues to defer her attendance. She is also a member of the Appalachia Service Project.
Bosworth previously dated actor Matt Czuchry, whom she met on the set of their short-lived television series, Young Americans. She is currently dating actor Orlando Bloom the two met outside a coffee shop and were later introduced to each other by a friend, before meeting again at the premiere of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. The couple separated in 2005 but have since resumed their relationship.
Bosworth has two cats, Louise and Dusty, and a dog named Lila, whom she adopted while on a 2004 vacation in Morocco. She has noted that although equestrianism is her hobby, she has been unable to practice it, because of the potential risk of injury involved affecting her film career.

| 21 made 23.The card-counting drama, starring Kevin Spacey, his perennial sidekick, Kate Bosworth, and Across the Universe's Jim Sturgess, topped the weekend box office with $23 million, per estimates compiled Sunday by Exhibitor Relations.Overall, business was way off from last year when Blades of Glory led the pack.Still, 21 performed better than expected, and was the only Top 10 finisher to post a decent per-screen average, taking in nearly $9,000 at each of its theaters. For Spacey and Bosworth, who have costarred in three movies together in less than four years, 21 goes down as their second-biggest debut after the art-house effort Superman Returns.Elsewhere: • If there's anything less successful than the President Bush's Iraq War, it's Hollywood's Iraq War movies. Stop-Loss (eighth place, $4.5 million) joins In the Valley of Elah, Redacted, Rendition, Home of the Brave and others in the neglect pile.
• The joke may have finally got old. Superhero Movie (third place, $9.5 million) is the weakest opening of all the Epic Scary Date spoof comedies of recent years.
• Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who! (second place, $17.4 million; $117.3 million overall) did it—it gave Hollywood its first $100 million hit of the year.
• Flawless is a flop no more. The Demi Moore-Michael Caine caper flick ($180,000) averaged an okay $5,142 at each of its 35 theaters, improving on the per-screen-average debut for the 1999 Robert De Niro-Philip Seymour Hoffman movie of the same name, per Box Office Mojo stats.
• After a solid debut, Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns (fourth place, $7.8 million; $32.8 million overall) pulled a Cloverfield, and saw ticket sales plunge 61 percent.
• Vantage Point ($2.4 million, $69.4 million) ends its Top 10 run after a nifty five-week stay.
• Also falling from of the Top 10: Never Back Down ($2.4 million; $21.3 million overall); and, Under the Same Moon ($2.3 million; $6.7 million overall).
• The Italian drama My Brother Is an Only Child was the biggest little hit of the weekend, grossing $10,500 at one theater. Here's a recap of the top-grossing weekend films based on Friday-Sunday estimates compiled by Exhibitor Relations:1. 21, $23.7 million 2.
